Cleaning and re-proofing your Cambrai cover.

Stage One - Washing:

  • It is most important to wash your cover otherwise the effectiveness of the re-proofing may be reduced. However the cover should not be over-washed as this may well cause damage to the cloth fibers. Do not be tempted to use a steam cleaner or pressure washer as the water pressure can be sufficient to damage the fabric. A small domestic pressure washer may be used to remove the soiling after soaking but make sure that the nozzle is kept a reasonable distance away from the cover.
  • WHEN WASHING DO NOT LAY THE COVER ON THE GROUND! DO NOT TUMBLE DRY YOUR COVER!
  • By Hand. Hang the cover over a rope or strong washing line or place in a bath or similar container and soak the cover in WARM water - no more than hand-hot – to which Pre-Soak detergent has been added . We recommend ‘Grangers Tent Clean’ (available from camping shops. LIGHTLY scrub any heavily soiled areas with a nail brush or similar soft scrubbing brush and re-soak these areas. Once all the contamination appears to be loosened rinse well, again in WARM water only. A garden hose may then be used to remove all the detergent and final soiling. The cover should then be allowed to dry naturally. Once the cover is properly dry, proceed to stage two.
  • By Machine. Machine Washing should be carried out with the utmost care. A large commercial machine is essential to allow sufficient space for the cover to rinse. SHORT COOL WASH ONLY NOT ABOVE 30C DO NOT TUMBLE DRY. Short Spin Only. Use any soft soap or non-biological washing powder/liquid detergent as above. A pre-wash by hand can be most effective especially if the cover is then machine washed before drying. Once the cover is properly dry, proceed to stage two.

Stage Two - Re-Proofing:

  • Do Not lay the cover on the ground, hanger floor etc. DO NOT spray whilst on the aircraft!. The proofing liquid will penetrate the cover and will collect any contaminants in contact with the cover, which will then pass into the cover, possible irreversibly.
  • Hang the cover over a rope or strong washing line in an open covered area. In fine weather re-proofing can be done outside so long as the cover does not get wet before the proofing agent has dried.
  • We recommend the use of ‘FABSIL’ waterproofing liquid. It is easy to obtain and use, and does not leave the waxy or greasy coating on the cover required by some waterproofing agents which will pick up contaminants. Be careful not to use wax-based liquids or compounds for this reason.
  • Read the caution notice on the container before use!
  • Apply the Fabsil with a paintbrush or coarse spray, the latter being most suitable. A pump-up garden spray is ideal. Always ensure that there is adequate ventilation.
  • WHEN SPRAYING ALWAYS WEAR A SUITABLE VAPOUR/DROPLET BREATHING MASK
  • Treat the whole cover systematically a panel at a time, maintaining a wet edge. Ensure that all the seams receive adequate treatment. Coverage rate should be approximately 1 litre per 5 square meters. An average Cockpit and Cowling cover should require slightly less than 2 litres of liquid to do the job properly. It is not necessary to coat the straps except at the attachment points, but it is not detrimental to do so.
  • Immediately after application lightly rub the treated fabric with a clean cloth. The cover must be protected from rain and dew whilst drying. Allow around six hours.
